Brandy Melville

credit: a cup of haute style (let me know if you want it down!)

store | Brandy Melville
address | 850 Granville St.

I was walking down Granville St yesterday when I saw Brandy Melville. I remembered Lauren's review of this store and walked right in. Brandy Melville orginated from Italy and has recently expanded to the US and Canada.

I'd say their clothing is much like Free People, but a more affordable price point. From what I saw on my quick shopping trip, jewelry were under $10. Tops ranged from $11-40 and bottoms and sweaters were $30-70. As it's spring, much of the collection included light sweaters, blouses camis and shorts. The majority of the tops are one size fits all and the bottoms run in European sizing.

I purchased a pair of burgundy jeggings and a white blouse as well as a bracelet.

I'm super happy with thesee purchases, the clothing is so soft and I'm happy with the quality. I saw lots of cute sweaters and the weather is still quite chilly so I'll definitely be back!

Gastown Tasting Tour

Last Friday I went on a food tour via Vancouver Food Tour. They offer different types of tours: Craft Cocktail Tour Series, Gastown Beer 'n' Bites Tour and the very cool sounding Salt Spring Island Food Tour. They even do a custom self-guided tour if you have your own budget to work with and want something more intimate! I went on the popular Gastown Tasting Tour with some co-workers on the company that I work for.

We met up our guide, Carlos, inside the Waterfront Station building. Very convenient since the first spot was at Rogue Kitchen and Wet Bar.

This stop consisted of beer and food pairings. The beers were: R&B Sun God Wheat Ale, Driftwood Fat Tug IPA, Driftwood Farm Hand Ale and Central City IPA. The food pairings were: lobster mac and cheese, chilli, Vietnamese tacos (which was the filling of a banh mi inside the bun of a cha siu bao) and I believe the pulled pork sandwich.

Favourite beer was the Sun God Wheat Ale which was a lighter tasting beer that was very smooth. I also liked the Driftwood Farm Hand Ale while the other beers were just too bold and bitter for me. But I'm not a huge beer person to begin with. Favourite food was the lobster mac and cheese which was very creamy and had nice chunks of lobster. I wish I had the full size! Chilli was my second favourite. It had good kick of heat and spice and was very hearty. The pulled pork sandwich was dry and so was the meat inside the Vietnamese taco. My favourite from the taco was actually the pickled vegetables inside. I'll definitely be back for the lobster mac and cheese.

Second stop was Salt Tasting Room located inside Gastown's Blood Alley. This stop consisted of charcuterie, cheese and wine tasting. Normally, guests would make their own tasting plate based on the meat, cheese and condiments written on a giant chalkboard inside the restaurant. For our stop, everything had already been chosen for us. They actually had two different types of platters, one on the other side of the table. Unfortunately, my camera was hijacked so I didn't take photos of the other side (nor do I remember what the other platter consisted of).

These were the pairings on my side of the table:

All of the pairings were amazing! You really could not go wrong and I found that all the food pairings went well with all of the wines. I can't pick a food that I liked best but for the wine I loved the Pentage Gamay Noir.

This was my favourite stop. Although I've heard of Salt before, I never really had that itch to go so it was great that I had the opportunity to visit and a wonderful surprise that I loved it so much.

Our final stop was Judas Goat Taberna, located right next to Salt Tasting Room. Judas Goat does Spanish inspired tapas. We got red peppers stuffed with ricotta, fried polenta, puff pastries filled with manchego cheese that went with pickled green bean and membrillo, bacon and egg bites, sweet potato empanadas and chocolate mousse with cherries. The bacon and egg bites and the puff pastries were my favourite. Everything was very good though! Being tapas style, the serving sizes are very small and I felt less filling than what you'd get at an izakaya. It was a good experience and great staff but for the amount of food you get, I'd say be prepared to spend some money if you're going to eat until you're stuffed!

After the tour, our group went off to Guilt and Co. for drinks and board games.

The food tour was a great experience and as a local, it exposed me to new experiences and facts about Gastown and Vancouver that I was not aware of. I would definitely recommend this tour and the company who were so great with arranging everything from timing to allergies (thank you Melody!).

Review - Remington Pearl Pro Curling Wand

I've been able to use curling irons. Every time I've used it, I would end up with this ugly bend in my hair from clamp. When the clipless curling irons came out, I was curious to try it but didn't want to spend a lot of money on a curling iron like a T3 or a Sedu only to have it not work. So I went to London Drugs and got this Remington iron instead:

Remington Pearl Pro Curling Wand

I purchased this from London Drugs for $35.99; it's currently on sale for $29.99 until March 25, 2012. It has a tapered wand. I got the larger version which is 1.5"-1" which is good for medium-long to long hair although a smaller version, 1"-.5" is available for shorter hair or if you want tighter curls.

The temperature goes up to 410ºC, I use it at the default temperature 356ºC. I don't think you would need to go higher than this temperature unless you have very thick, coarse hair. It also comes with a glove that helps to protect your hand (somewhat) from the heat. But honestly, I found that it made the job harder so I don't use it with the glove; I just make sure fingers don't touch the iron.

This is what my hair looks like right after curling:

I really like the results! It gives me loose curls, but still enough definition for my hair that's medium-long. It loosens throughout the day, which is to be expected unless you pile on a lot of hairspray. I don't mind the curls loosening up more so I just use AG Foam Weightless Volumizer which allows my hair to hold fairly well throughout the day.

My only criticism is that I would've maybe included a heat proof case with this. It has a cool tip but it really doesn't stand on its own and so it ends up lying flat. It automatically shut off within an hour but I feel that with the high temperatures, it could still do damage depending on what surface the iron is resting on. To turn the iron off, you have to hold down the power button for a few seconds before it tuns off. I'm used to my flat iron so I pressed it once, assuming the iron was off only to find 10 minutes later it was still on. So I just unplug it right away to ensure I don't burn something.

But overall, I'm very happy with this product and I definitely recommend it. With more practice I'm sure the curls will get better looking :)

Red Wagon Cafe and Brunch

This restaurant was recently featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives on the Food Network. I'm not sure when exactly they just opened, but probably sometime early last year? It used to be a Chinese restaurant beforehand and my sister recommended it to me and I've gone a few times and I love it.

Gone are the days when you could walk in and sit wherever you want for brunch. If you come here, expect to line up. At most, I've waited 20 mins for a table but I've read reviews of 45+ min waits which is not unusual considering that the lineup is frequently out the door.

I usually get the omelettes when I come here. The one up top is the cheddar and bacon omelette and I asked to have mushrooms added inside. I looove the omelettes; the eggs are done perfect and fluffy and the aged white cheddar adds a good kick. The toast are perfectly buttered, the potatoes are pretty good; I find them a little too salty at times.

The pork belly is pretty famous. The boyfriend usually gets the pork belly dish but today he wanted an omelette but of course needed an order of pork belly to the side. It's so crispy on the outside, yet you can easily cut through it with a butter knife. The inside is moist and juicy.

Another mention is the coffee.. there's something about their coffee that I find so comforting. Service is always good. Sometimes it's a little slow but understandable because of how busy it is. My coffee is always topped up and they're very easy going and can talk to you about anything.

Another place I love for brunch are Locus Cafe on Main St. and my absolute favourite, Crepe Montagne in Whistler.

What are your favourite places for brunch? I gotta try Cafe Medina next!

------------

Oh and I know my blog has been very food related lately. I'm actually going to Horizon's next week for the $20 steak and lobster special!

I haven't been shopping for clothing etc. lately as I'm going to New Jersey for my cousin's wedding in May. The flight from Vancouver was already pretty expensive, but I'm planning to purchase the new iPad before the trip. We'll be doing some shopping in New York and also outlet shopping in New Jersey so I'm saving up for that!

I am however looking for some accessories to purchase :)

Suika Izakaya

I work in the area and a few coworkers of mine discovered Suika when it just opened up. I absolutely love Suika and I'm so happy that they've been so successful especially with all the izakayas that have recently opened in Vancouver. Suika and Zakkushi are my favourite izakayas in Vancouver.

Here are some dishes I like:

miso ramen / ox-tail ramen.
This was featured on CBC as being the best ramen in Vancouver and it definitely is a favourite of mine. The ox-tail meat is super tender and the broth is very rich. I do miss that it doesn't have vegetables in it. Everyone needs to try this one out!

tako karaage and my ebi-mayo
This was my first time trying tako karaage (breaded, deep fried octopus) and I've only tried it at Suika. It was good, a little salty for me but the octopus was cooked well, it wasn't rubbery.

Ebi-mayo is a staple for izakayas here and is always a winner here. I love that rice chip (I think that's what it is) that comes with it and the sauce has a good kick to it. I can't remember the name of the cocktails but one was watermelon and the other was strawberry.

Other dishes I love:
- asari yaki udon (udon with clams)
- katsu curry on lunch menu
- double tonkatsu meal on lunch menu (big enough for two people!)
